Signs Your Home May Require Rewiring

  • Aluminum Wiring – Homes built between 1965 and 1973 may have aluminum wiring. This wiring has significantly increased the chances of a house fire. If you suspect that you have aluminum wiring, you should contact Blue Collar electric to schedule an inspection.
  • Burning Smells – A persistent burning smell signifies loose connections or faulty wiring, which can cause electrical shorts and create a fire.
  • The problem should be addressed immediately! Contact an electrician at Blue Collar Electric for 24×7 service or your local fire department.
  • Discolored Outlets & Switches – If you have switches or outlets with visible signs of discoloration from burning, a professional should assess the problems immediately!
  • Flickering Lights – If the lighting in your home flickers regularly, you may have a wiring problem.
  • Frequently Tripped Circuit Breaker – Circuit breakers are a safety valve when there is too much electrical demand for your circuit.
  • Insufficient Number of Outlets – This problem is often associated with older homes. If you require several power strips and extension cords, you should contact an electrician to add circuits and additional wire outlets
  • Knob and Tube Wiring – For homes built before 1950, your basement may have wires running through porcelain cylinders called “tubes” in the floor joists for the above floor. There are also porcelain “knobs” that secure the wire. These obsolete electrical systems have no ground increasing the risk of shock. The rubber insulation is prone to deterioration. This is also called “open wiring” because the wires are exposed. It also makes home insurance more difficult to obtain.
  • Old Wiring – Many homes built more than 50 years ago probably require an electrical overhaul. Wiring insulation breaks down over time, and if the circuit is heavily used with excessive electrical load, it breaks down even faster.
  • Renovation – When renovating your home, your electrical system must often be required to be current with the latest electrical code.
  • Two Prong Sockets – These outlets have an ungrounded electrical system. There is a greater danger of electrocution since the system is electrical ungrounded and won’t have any way to redirect the power safely.
